چکیده
AIM: The protective effect of gallic acid (3,4,5trihydroxybenzoic acid), which is a phenolic substance with well-known antioxidant characteristics, against liver ischemia reperfusion damage was investigated in this study. METHODS: Female Spraque-dawley rats were divided into four groups. Group I was set as control group and 60 minutes of reperfusion after 45 minutes of ischemia was applied to the other three groups. Gallic acid was administered through gavage method to each of the animals in Group III and Group IV for seven days prior to Ischemia/Reperfusion. Blood samples for biochemical examinations and liver tissue samples for histologic examinations were collected. RESULT: When Group II was compared with other groups in terms of ALT and AST serum values, a significant increase was observed in Group II serum amount. ALT levels of Group III (50 mg/kg gallic acid) and Group IV (100 mg/kg gallic acid) among treatment groups were found lower compared to Group II (I/R group) (p<0.05). When AST serum values were considered, the serum amount pertaining to group III was found to be significantly lower when compared with other groups (p<0.05). Histological findings are in line with these results. CONCLUSION: In accordance with the obtained results, we may state that gallic acid protects against liver ischemia reperfusion damage.

The anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects of gallic acid against mucosal inflammation- and erosions-induced by gastric ischemia-reperfusion in rats
The present study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of gallic acid on gastric mucosal lesions caused by ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in rat. Forty male rats were randomly divided into sham, control (I/R injury) and three gallic acid-pretreated groups. To induce I/R lesions, the celiac artery was clamped for 30 min and then the clamp was removed to allow reperfusion for 6 hr. Pretreat...
متن کاملGallic acid protects the liver in rats against injuries induced by transient ischemia-reperfusion through regulating microRNAs expressions
Objective(s): Gallic acid (GA) is a highly effective antioxidant, which its beneficial effects are well known, but its impact on expression of microRNAs (miRs) following hepatic ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) is not well recognized. Therefore, the current research was designed to specify the beneficial effect of GA on miRs (122 and 34a), liver functional tests, and histopathological alterations bey...
متن کاملOrexin-A Improves Hepatic Injury Following Renal Ischemia Reperfusion in Rats
Introduction: Orexins are novel neuropeptides that are localized in neurons in the lateral hypothalamus. They are implicated in a wide variety of physiological functions. Orexin peptides and receptors are found in many peripheral organs such as kidneys. It has been demonstrated that exogenous orexin-A can induce protective effects against ischemia–reperfusion injury in many organs. The goal ...
متن کاملThe effects of gallic acid on pain and memory following transient global ischemia/reperfusion in Wistar rats
Objective: It is generally agreed that most of the phenomena observed during brain ischemia and reperfusion can be explained by the damage to membrane structure. Oxidative stress is resulted in an imbalance between high consumption of oxygen and low levels of endogenous antioxidants. It is known that gallic acid (GA) is a strong antioxidant. The present study was carried out to evaluate the eff...

Objective(s): Hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) is one of the major causes of hepatic failure during liver transplantation, trauma, and infections. The present study investigated the protective effect of intra-portal administration of 2-methoxycinnamaldehyde (2-MCA) on hepatic IRI in rats. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four rats ...
